The Five of Cups ~ Letting Go of the Past
Tarot Tuesday! The card for the week is the Five of Cups, representing: Change, loss, grief and emotional renewal. In numerology the number five represents change, and in the watery, feeling-orientated suit of Cups, this can be experienced as emotional loss. But when we remember that change is an important and necessary part of life, we can begin to work with our feelings, release what is no longer vibrant or helpful to us, and ultimately experience emotional renewal.
The Owl pictured is significant. Traditionally owls are symbols of insight and wisdom, indicating that there is much wisdom to be gained through our experience. “The owl in the card is perched on the edge of her nest. Below her three eggs are broken and forlorn. She focuses on those broken eggs instead of tending to the two eggs that are still intact, that still need her.” (Linestrider Tarot). Emotions, especially in regards to matters of the heart may be fragile now, much like eggs. It’s important that we grieve our losses, but not ignore what is still available to us.
The Five of Cups suggests you may be having trouble letting go of the past. Old memories and emotions may be coming back to haunt you. Embrace all that you are feeling, allowing your emotions to flow through you, like a gentle and comforting stream. If grief comes up, embrace it as well. You are clearing out stuck emotional energies that will release you to experience a more fulfilling and joyful life.
This week instead of focusing on what you are leaving behind, call upon the wisdom of Owl, to help you see a bigger picture of what is available to you next. Celebrate your losses and prepare for new emotional beginnings!
