Eclipses—both lunar and solar—offer great opportunity to breakthrough into new ways of being. I describe them as celestial windows or portals; each eclipse—depending on the sign of the zodiac in which it falls—holds a unique potential to shapeshift your current reality. In fact, in esoteric astrology, eclipses are considered to be Karmic releases.

Eclipses will also stir the pot around anything in your life that needs to be transformed. The energy being—the bigger the breakthrough—the bigger the stimulation (or breakdown of old structures). With both a lunar and solar eclipse this month, this is truly a time to transform.  

Friday’s lunar eclipse is in Leo—the dramatic, expressive, royal sign of the lion. It aligns with rebellious planet Uranus, in fiery, conquering Aries, adding an extra dose of energetic bravado, with strong urges to make your mark…And resist anything that seems to be standing in your way!

Many will experience this energetic push in relationships and partnerships. All this planetary fire can be selfish, and doesn’t always play with others. Now is a time to consider the difference between being selfish—and self-full. The Leo element adds a heart focused balance to the equation. Self-full comes from the heart and a desire to express your needs in a holistic way. Selfish is just plain ego.

When your needs-wants-desires come from a balanced place, it is truly a magnificent thing! Pay attention to the balance between your needs and the needs of others—the timeless dance of relationship. This is a moment to look for more balance in every aspect of life.

Mercury: Mercury ends it’s retrograde in Capricorn on Jan 25th, two days after the Full Moon. We experience both Lunar and Mercury Retrograde energies at least a few days before and after, so this is a powerful time for completion, and to take note of what you want to let go of. Anything that didn’t bear fruit during the MR can now be reviewed, resent or let go of entirely. But wait a few days after Mercury goes direct, just to be sure.

Mars: Powerful, aggressive Mars in Scorpio, engages the Leo full Moon in a contemptuous dance. Both the Lion and Scorpion are fixed signs and want what they want. Watch for power struggles, and make sure you’re clear about your position before going to the mat. In other words, pick your battles. You may just need to blow off some steam with this heady combo, and a cardio workout could do the trick. Stand in your truth, but be willing to back-off when needed.

Asteroid Athena: Athena, the Greek Goddess of truth and fairness, is associated with the night Owl--the Seer of the Unseen. Asteroid Athena (Pallas-Athene) is directly opposite the Leo Full Moon, bringing some goddess, feminine ju-ju to the mix. Athena is the archetype of wise, old soul, and she is a reminder to follow your intuition, and to see beyond the “real” or ordinary circumstances of life.
