Tarot Tuesday - The Two of Wands

Tarot Tuesday - the card for the week is the Two of Wands, representing: Dominion, forging fortification, centeredness, self-mastery, strength and divine timing.

The great inner fire ignited through the Ace of Wands gathers energy and momentum in the Two of Wands. Now it needs to be focused and stabilized. An analogy is the ancient art of forging iron, the process of shaping and strengthening metal through the heat of flame. You may feel the impulse to conquer new horizons, but here the warrior becomes king, choosing to harness his creative powers for another day. This is self-mastery. You are preparing and fortifying yourself for what is ahead. Center yourself and then, when the time is right, you will be more that ready to act.

Wishing you a centered week!

My Mexico City Adventure

An adventure involving eye surgery, angels, kindness, a sister rescue and what the heck, even though its a medical emergency, that doesn’t mean we can’t eat great food, drink tequila and go to the Frida Kahlo Museum.

And, one where I learned the true meaning of grace.

The moment I arrived in Mexico City, I felt a heart opening, a feeling that this is the place I’ve always been meant to experience. I was visiting dear friends, Ed and Korland, who had rented an airbnb with an invitation to come and play. While they were working, I spent the first day exploring the city with Aturo, a kind gentleman tour guide who took me around the city while explaining the rich history of the city and its people. The architecture, surrounding mountains, explosions of intoxicating color, Our Lady of Guadalupe, delicious street food and so much more. Magic.

On the second day of my trip, I began to experience white floaters in my left eye. As the day wore on they would come and go, and I didn’t think much of it. I had had floaters before—as many people do. The next day, however, after a mind-blowing lunch at a tiny restaurant specializing in Mexican-India cuisine—I ate grasshoppers for the first time—delcious! Check out their fabulous menu cover (third pic)—the floaters became black jagged lines. After some secret googling by Ed (he didn’t want me to freakout), we began to realize I could be in trouble.

We happened to be walking by an eyeglass store and went in. In Mexico City very few people speak English. After describing my symptoms with the help of Google Translator, the technician told us that we needed to go to a hospital right away, as I could have a detached retina. As grace would have it, there was a hospital near by that specialized in ophthalmology.

We ended up in a crowded emergency room where, again, no one spoke English. It was hard not to panic. But then, a young Mexican man who did speak English came forward and spent an hour with us, helping us to negotiate the system. I don’t think we could have done it without him. I do believe he was an angel. Like if I looked again, he hadn’t even been there. The whole experience was quite surreal, and I remember a moment when I turned to Ed and asked: “Is this a dream?” And his response was something, like: “Unfortunately love, it’s not.”

We get into the doctor, and after much eye prodding and poking (with a blunt metal instrument—painful! Poor Ed’s hand will never recover), they determined that I had a torn retina. If not treated quickly it could become the afore mentioned detached retina! They scheduled me for a laser procedure the next day. Yay!

We arrive for the procedure, but there’s too much blood in my eye to do it. (Note: torn retinas are not an unusual occurrence and usually can be treated easily with the laser procedure.)

Then came so many decisions. Do I fly home immediately? What if my retina detaches mid-air? I can’t lift anything, so no carry-on baggage, etc. Do we stick around and give it another try? Here I must say, the medical care in Mexico City was beyond first-rate. The doctors and staff were amazing, and I felt more than comfortable in their care.

After much discussion and phone calls with friends and family, my sister Shannon offered to come down and we agreed. She grabbed the only direct flight to Mexico City the next day. Big Sis to the rescue!

We decided to return to the hospital and have the second procedure the next day.

And, it was successful!

We celebrated that night big time (hello tequila) at a celebrated Mexico City Restaurant. I can’t remember the name, but I’m sure my hosts would, as we were on a wait list and lucky to get the reservation. I just remember the succulent pork with pink mole!

Shannon and I stayed an extra day to explore more of the city. We went back to see the Lady of Guadalupe and I offered gratitude. We went to the Frida Kahlo Museum, and although I had not previously been a fan, my heart broke open with her story, bravery and creative life. And her art. Oh her art!

In the process, we had some deep and revealing conversations over coffee. We shared sister stuff, we cried and we celebrated. And one of our favorite places was a silver smithery tucked in an old neighbor street with the most exquisite silver jewelry. Of course, we shopped. And Shannon said, “See, there’s a silver lining!!”

I’ll leave you with this, in the words of Frida Kahlo: “Viva La Vida.”

Tarot Tuesday - the Queen of Swords!

Tarot Tuesday - the card for the week is the Queen of Swords, representing: Logic, truth, arbitration, justice objectivity, insight and balance.

This is not your warm and fuzzy queen! Some may call her cold because she rules not from her passions or emotions, but from her intellect. She is a symbol for clear thinking and justice. The Queen of Swords is a great arbitrator, someone empowered to examine the facts and make clear decisions. She encourages you to be objective in your dealings with others and not give into irrational thinking. She offers the gift of clarity, which comes from a strong moral compass and a detachment from the opinions of others. This queen brings the ability to balance judgmental thinking with the highest good.

Wishing you a balanced week!
