The Knight of Cups ~ The Crucible of Desire

Tarot Tuesday! The card for the week is the Knight of Cups, representing: Emotions, desire, imagination, wishes and transformation. Like all knights of the Tarot, the Knight of Cups is a seeker and adventurer. His realm is water, here representing emotions, feelings and sexual desire. He is on a quest to fulfill his deepest longings.

Passion is this knight’s calling card. Passion, like desire, can be a tricky animal. On one hand it’s a powerful creative force that opens new doors of possibility. On the other, it can be all-consuming, unleashing primal energy that may be overwhelming. The Knight of Cups is learning to master these deeper energies.

If the Knight of Cups has come your way, it is a time to make friends with your sexual needs and your passions. To live them out with awareness. You’re sure to discover much about yourself! This knight also hints at transformation. By being willing to go into the crucible of your desires, you will be liberated to live a more authentic life, freed from the secrets and shadows that hide and bide us in our unconscious reality.

I created this knight with the archetype of Lancelot, from the Arthurian legends, in mind. Lancelot, a true Knight of Hearts, fell in love with King Arthur’s bride, Guinevere, but used his desire to destructive ends. He is a reminder that deception, even in the name of love, never wins. Ultimately he became a crusader of Holy Grail, representing eternal love, a love that is only found within.

The Knight of Wands ~ Out of Darkness into the Light!

Tarot Tuesday! The card for the week is the Knight of Wands, representing: Power, creativity, intuition, and new beginnings. This card is literally interpreted as: “Out of darkness, into the light.” This fiery knight is ripe for action, brimming with energy and ready to conquer new horizons!

Time to leave the darkness of past struggles behind, and set your compass for new adventures. The Knight of Wands sees the world through new eyes. This perspective can open many doors--if you’re courageous enough to walk through them. And you are! Whatever life challenges come your way, you’re ready to face them—with an open heart and mind.

The Knight of Wand’s secret weapon is confidence and will-power. You are creating your destiny now and the more you take charge, the more forward movement and opportunity you will experience. You’ve got the power, so go for it!

Ultimately, the Knight of Wands is a seeker, a spiritual warrior. His journey reminds me of the “Hero’s Journey”, described by Joseph Campbell as: “A series of courageous acts, a continual process of trials and triumphs, which offer a life lived through self-discovery.”

The Knight of Wands tells us that, although we may be leaving the past behind there are amazing new adventures ahead. Trust yourself and your instincts. Don’t look to others for validation—you’ve got this. When in doubt, trust your intuition. It is a powerful ally now!  

The Knight of Swords/Mercury Retrograde ~ The Art of Grounding!

Tarot Tuesday! The card for the week is the Knight of Swords representing: New ideas, inspiration, freedom and impetuousness! Ruled by the element of air, this blustery knight is like a heady windstorm--he blows into our lives, stirring-up the dust and bringing change. He is the perfect companion for airy, impetuous Mercury going retrograde today (through January 24th)! 

The Knight of Swords says: Time to think outside the box. He impels us to actively explore new ideas and concepts, without limits, judgment or criticism—whether internally or externally. Indeed, he is a breath of fresh air—and resents restrictions to his freedom—much like The Fool of the Major Arcanum. At times he may seem brash or even arrogant, but this is because he’s inspired to share his ideas with others, even though they may be ahead of their time and not completely grounded in present world reality. 

And like the wind, this knight can change directions at the drop of a hat, which brings us to the Mercurial element of this card and the Mercury Retrograde. This MR begins in the open, inspirational sign of Aquarius, but swiftly shifts backwards into the sign of the Goat—grounded, hard-working, industrious, Capricorn. So the question is: How can we stay open to new ideas and inspirations and still stay grounded? The key is finding a balance between being open and flexible, yet staying present in the here and now.

Take time to meditate and still your mental wind-storms. Breathe air into your creative visions, then release them to the universe, knowing that they will manifest when the time is right. This is the art of inspirational grounding!

Last week we had the Queen of Swords, and this week we have the Knight—so it seems we are in the realm of swords once again! Swords are the element of air, of thoughts, ideas, inspiration and messages. The Knight of Swords represents: innovation, new ideas, communication, independence and courage!

The Knight of Swords is a harbinger of change. He’s like a strong wind that blows into your life, shaking the trees and even ruffling feathers! This knight is highly intellectual and innovative; indeed he is often ahead of his time. You may not always agree with the Knight of Swords, but he will definitely open your mind to new ideas.

If the Knight of Swords has appeared to you, this is a time to “clear the air”. Is there something you need to communicate to someone? Is there something you need to express to the world? Now is the time!

Of all the court cards, knights are perhaps the most courageous, as they are willing to grow and evolve with life changes. At the same time, they can also be impetuous and arrogant, believing that their ways and ideas are more important than others. The Knight of Swords is learning humility and how to balance his heart with his mind.

So this week, embrace change and new ideas. Free yourself by communicating your truth. It doesn’t matter if others don’t receive your message clearly. In the immortal words of En Vogue: “Free your mind, and the rest will follow!”

Tarot Tuesday! The card for the week is The Knight of Wands, representing: Creativity, Intuition, Adventure and Courage!

The Knight of Fire is the archetype of a true seeker, on the path to adventure—the grand adventure of life, with the whole world before him. You could say--the world is his oyster!

This fiery knight is full of energy, dynamic, and confident as he faces challenges head-on, with an open heart, using intuition as his guide. He is searching for a richer life experience, and his mission is to fully actualize his creative and spiritual potential.

This Knight's path embodies the “Hero’s Journey”, what Joseph Campbell describes as: A series of courageous acts, a continual process of trials and triumphs, which offers a life lived through self-discovery. His mantra is: To thine own self be true.
